Video is being used more and more on our digital channels, so don't overlook adding subtitles to the final cut.
Research from Facebook and Google both shows that the majority of mobile users are consuming content with sound off. Therefore it's imperative that video content, especially for social media, has subtitles so users stop and watch your content, rather than scrolling past it. The BBC are doing it, so if they think it is important, so should you!
You don't need to be paying extra to your videographer or creative agency as it is really easy and cheap to do. Here's how:
1. Upload video to YouTube
Upload your video to YouTube and add subtitles. Once you have done this, go to your video and make sure the 'Subtitles / closed captions (c)' option on bottom right of the screen is selected so that the subtitles display.
2. 4k Downloader
Download the 4K Video Downloader application and follow instructions. It works best when Smart Mode is activated and the Subtitle option is set to English. Once your video is downloaded from here, click the subtitles icon on the video play bar and select English. The subtitled file is saved automatically to your computer.
Rev.com
Another cheap option for transcriptions and subtitles is Rev.com . You just send them your video or upload your YouTube or Vimeo link and they will transcribe and add subtitles on for as little as $1 per minute of footage.
